One cover for every Sedan and Touring: the genuine E46 M front bumper
BMW lists one M front bumper cover for every E46 Sedan and Touring, before and after the facelift. Why it is hard to find new, and what most M-Tech fronts are.
By zauberlabs

The M front bumper is the face of the M Sport package, and it changes the whole look of an E46 Sedan or Touring. It is also a part where what BMW made and what is sold today have drifted far apart. BMW's catalogue lists one M front cover that fits every Sedan and Touring, early or late. Finding one new is now hard, and most of what is sold as an "M-Tech" front is something else.
The short version
- One cover fits every Sedan and Touring. The catalogue lists a single primed M front bumper cover for both bodies, and also a version painted in each colour code. 1
- No facelift split. Pre-facelift and facelift cars take the same M cover, unlike the standard front bumper, which changed in September 2001. 1
- An earlier, Sedan-only design exists under the older M aero code, with its own primed and painted versions. 1
- New genuine covers were hard to find in October 2026: one BMW partner's shop listed the cover as not deliverable, one shop still offered it, and we found no used genuine cover at the dismantlers we checked. 2
- Most "M-Tech" fronts on sale are reproductions. They cite the BMW number for comparison only, and only some state a German type approval. 2
What BMW's catalogue lists
The M front cover is part of the M aerodynamics package, which BMW launched in May 2001 as part of the second-generation M Sport package for every 3 Series except the Compact. 3 The parts catalogue keeps it in its own groups, under two option codes. 1
| Version | Bodies | Finish |
|---|---|---|
| M aero front, later design (code 716) | Sedan and Touring | primed, or painted in a colour code |
| M aero front, earlier design (code 715) | Sedan only | primed, or painted in a colour code |
For a Touring there is therefore only one genuine M front cover. For a Sedan there are two designs, and the later one is the one that matches a Touring. 1 Why owners call these covers "M-Tech" and how the codes relate to the package names is in "'M-Tech' is not a steering wheel"; what else the package brought is in "One option box, four upgrades".
Why one cover fits early and late cars
The standard front bumper of the Sedan and Touring changed at the September 2001 facelift: the catalogue names its groups "up to 9-01" and "from 09-01", as our bumper article explains. 1 The later M cover does not. The catalogue lists the same cover for cars built before and after the facelift, and the part number's release month on one mirror is March 2001, months before the facelift and two months before the package launch. 1,3 A release month is when a part number became available, not a build date, so it says nothing about which cars it went on in the factory. It does show that the cover was not a facelift part.
There are also no variants for equipment in the data we hold: no separate version for parking sensors or headlight washers on these fronts, and no seller stated a replacement number. 1,2 So "which M front fits my Sedan or Touring?" has one answer from the catalogue, whatever the build date: the later primed cover, or the painted version in your colour code. Brackets and fixings are a separate question; see "Forget the engine" for what changes around the cover.
How easy is it to buy, in October 2026?
On 16 October 2026 the research checked European sellers of genuine BMW parts for this one cover. What their own pages said that day: 2
- One authorised BMW partner listed the cover at about €578, with a list price of about €613, as not deliverable.
- One German online shop offered it for about €611, plus a bulky-item surcharge and shipping, with a short delivery time. The owner checked the listing in a browser on the same day and it could be ordered.
- A third shop listed it at the BMW list price without a stock statement.
- No used genuine cover was found at the five used-parts sellers and marketplaces checked; on the largest marketplace only part of the listings could be read.
That is a snapshot of one day, not a market survey, and it will change. 2 It does suggest that a new genuine M front for a Sedan or Touring now costs over €600 before painting, where you can get one at all.
What most "M-Tech" fronts are
Search for an E46 M front and most results are not genuine BMW parts. The research found reproductions from several aftermarket manufacturers, sold by German and Dutch shops and on marketplaces, from about €95 to about €290 before shipping, one as a complete kit with grille, fog lights and trim. 2
What their pages said: 2
- They quote the BMW number as a reference. One large parts shop states that original and order numbers are given for comparison only. None of the pages called its cover genuine.
- Only some state a German type approval (ABE). Two of the manufacturers' listings mention one; the others say nothing about approval.
- One kit excludes cars that already have the factory M package, which suggests it is made to convert a standard car rather than to replace a damaged M cover.
- One kit seller warns its own customers that an aftermarket bumper without an ABE or a parts report can cause trouble at inspection and with insurance.
That last point comes from a seller's page, not from an inspection authority, and we have not checked the rules ourselves. 2 If you buy a reproduction, ask for its approval paper and keep it with the car.
Buying an M front for a Sedan or Touring
- Genuine means the later M cover, primed or painted in your colour code. For a Sedan, the earlier design also exists; a Touring has only the one. 1
- Your build date does not matter for the cover itself. 1
- Expect a long search for a new genuine cover, and a price above €600 before paint. 2
- Read reproduction listings closely: a BMW number "for comparison" does not make a part genuine, and an approval should be stated, not assumed. 2
- Check the brackets that come with the cover and the ones on your car. 1
Notes on the evidence
Confidence. The part facts come from parts-catalogue mirrors and are graded MEDIUM. The launch of the M aerodynamics package is in BMW's own press release. Everything about availability, prices and reproductions is what sellers' pages said on 16 October 2026: a dated observation, graded LOW, with no seller or brand named.
Conflicts recorded. (1) On 16 October 2026 a BMW partner listed the cover as not deliverable while another shop listed a short delivery time; the owner's browser check found the second listing orderable that day. (2) Our data shows no equipment split for these fronts; that is an absence in the data we hold, not a guarantee.
Not established. Whether BMW will supply the cover again; the exact bracket and fixing differences between early and late cars; the approval status of each reproduction; the rules for aftermarket bumpers in other countries.
