'M-Tech' is not a steering wheel: a translation guide from forum slang to BMW's own names

Forum names like M-Tech, M-Tech 2 and xenons are not in BMW's parts catalogue. A glossary of what BMW actually calls E46 bumpers, steering wheels and lights.

Search for an E46 steering wheel and you will be offered an "M-Tech", an "M-Tech 2" and an "M-Sport". Search for a bumper and you will find "M-Tech I", "M-Tech II" and "M3 look". None of these words is in BMW's parts catalogue. That is not pedantry: the catalogue names are the ones that decide what fits, and the forum names blur exactly the distinctions that matter. This glossary pairs each common name with what BMW's catalogue and press material actually call the thing, and says how sure we are.

Bumpers: "M-Tech" is a package of covers

The E46 catalogue lists bumper covers in named groups, and the names are plain: "front bumper trim panel up to 09/2001", "front bumper trim panel from 09/2001", and for the M look "M trim panel bumper front SA715" and "M trim panel bumper front SA716", each with a matching rear group. 1 The vehicle index that leads to those groups names the option an Aerodynamics Package; the "M" is in the group names. 1 So "M-Tech" is the common shorthand for BMW's Aerodynamics bumper packages with M trim panels, of which there are two, under two option codes.

What the catalogue does not say is which code is the one owners call "M-Tech I" and which "M-Tech II". The mirror shows no dates and no marketing names for the two, and the one search result that offered a mapping was returning results for a different BMW model and was discarded. 5,6 If a seller says "M-Tech II front", ask which option code or which part family they mean; the two families are different parts and are not interchangeable by number. 1

Three more things the names hide. The Coupé and Convertible M front cover sits in a group called simply "M front bumper trim panel", without a package code, and carries the same number on Coupé and Convertible. 1 The Compact has its own M front and rear under code 716, not the Sedan's. 1 And the M3 has its own front and rear covers, including a separate rear for cars with park distance control; the M3 CSL lists only painted front covers. 1 "M3 bumper" is therefore a real catalogue family, but owners also report it does not bolt onto a non-M Coupé without adapters, because the M3's wings are wider; that part is forum knowledge. 5

Because the catalogue lists the M package covers against ordinary Sedans, Tourings and Compacts, fitting them to a non-M car is a normal, catalogued path; the thing to match is the body style and the production-date group, not the engine. 1

Steering wheels: "sports" and "M sports"

The catalogue's steering-wheel groups use two words for its two non-standard wheels: sports steering wheel (leather, in many trim-cover colours and wood-rim versions) and M sports steering wheel (leather or Alcantara). Each exists with and without multifunction buttons, and the groups carry the "Individual equipment" labels with option codes 255 and 256 for the sports wheel and 710 for the M sports wheel. 2 The standard four-spoke wheel is just "steering wheel, leather", code 240, and appears on Sedan, Touring and Compact only. 2

"M-Tech" appears nowhere in these groups. The wheel the forums call M-Tech is, in BMW's words, an M sports steering wheel. "M-Tech 2" has no catalogue counterpart either: the research found no second generation of the M sports wheel, only the one family in leather and Alcantara, so whatever the forums mean by it (owners describe thumb rests and a thicker rim) is a distinction the catalogue does not make. 2,5

BMW's own press kit for the 2001 facelift uses the same vocabulary: "leather rim sports steering wheel" as standard on the 318i Saloon, "sports multi-function steering wheel" and "cruise control" on the 318i SE. 3 Note the pairing: BMW's retrofit instruction treats the multifunction steering wheel and cruise control as one kit, which is why "MFL" and "cruise" wheels are the same thing in the catalogue. 7,2

The paddle wheel has a proper name too: "sports steering wheel, leather, for sequential gearbox", code 206, with M versions on the M3. The gearbox it belongs to is the Sequential Sports Gearbox (SSG) in BMW's 2001 press material, "with paddles behind the steering wheel"; the M3's is the SMG. 2,3 Calling it an "SMG wheel" on a 330i is harmless; expecting it to work without the gearbox is not, and that is covered in the steering-wheel article.

Lights: the option codes are the names

Headlights are the one area where the forum names map cleanly onto BMW's, because BMW's names are printed as option headers on the catalogue diagrams. On the facelift Coupé and Convertible diagrams, both mirrors print Xenon Light (522), Adaptive Headlights (524) and White direction indicator lights (785) as the conditions above the rows. 4 "Xenons" is option 522; "adaptive" or "AKL" is 524 and only exists together with 522; "clear indicators" are 785. 4

Two words to be careful with. "Facelift" is not how the catalogue groups parts: it splits them by production date, and the dates differ by body, which is why a 2001 car is the hard case for headlights and bumpers alike. 1,4 "TITAN" is a catalogue suffix the catalogue never defines; the reading as a titanium-coloured inner trim is unconfirmed. 4

Why the names cost money

  • A name can hide two parts. "M-Tech" covers two bumper packages under two codes; "sport wheel" covers a buttoned and an unbuttoned wheel with different hub caps. Buying by the forum name is buying one of two things. 1,2
  • A name can hide a body split. The Compact's M front is not the Sedan's; the Coupé's M front has no package code at all. 1
  • A name can imply a feature that is not there. An "M-Tech 2" wheel does not exist in the catalogue; an "SMG wheel" implies a gearbox. 2,5
  • The catalogue names decide fit; the forum names do not. When a listing gives only the forum name, ask for the BMW description or the option code it corresponds to.

Notes on the evidence

Conflicts recorded. (1) The marketing names and years of option codes 715 and 716 are not in the mirror; a search summary offering a mapping returned results for another BMW model and was discarded. (2) "M-Tech" as a steering-wheel name exists in forums and in early configurator labels, not in the catalogue. (3) The option-code meanings for steering wheels rest on the catalogue labels plus an enthusiast list; the codes' existence is MEDIUM, their meaning LOW.

Not established (open). Which of the two M trim-panel packages (codes 715 and 716) is "I" and which "II", and their years; whether the Coupé/Convertible M front cover belongs to either code; any second generation of the M sports steering wheel; the meaning of TITAN. The catalogue was read through one mirror with no data version, which caps its facts at MEDIUM.
