Same badge, different nose: how the E46 Compact's front end and bumpers differ from the Sedan's

The E46 Compact shares its name, not its nose: own headlights, own bumper covers front and rear, no facelift split. What that means when you buy parts.

The E46 Compact carries the 3 Series name and shares a great deal under the skin, but from the windscreen forward it is its own car. Its headlights fit no other E46, its bumper covers are its own front and rear, and the facelift that changed the Sedan's nose in 2001 never reached it. That makes buying front-end parts for a Compact simpler in one way and riskier in another: there are fewer variants to choose between, and almost everything sold as "E46" is not for your car.

The short version

  • Headlights: Compact only. None of the Compact's headlight numbers appears on any other E46 body, and none of theirs appears on the Compact. Two families, halogen and bi-xenon, each for left- and right-hand drive. 3
  • Front bumper: Compact only. Its standard front cover and its M package front cover are its own, not the Sedan's. 1,2
  • What splits the front covers is equipment, not date: each exists in a version for cars with the headlight cleaning system. 2
  • Rear bumper: the model matters. The 325ti has a different standard rear cover from the four-cylinder and diesel Compacts. 2
  • No facelift line. The catalogue shows no production-date split in the Compact's bumper groups and no running change in its headlights. 1,3
  • Europe only. The catalogue lists the Compact for Europe, including right-hand-drive UK cars, and not for North America. 4

Why the Compact is a different car at the front

The Sedan, Touring, Coupé and Convertible share an idea of an E46 nose, even where their parts differ: the same kind of headlight, a facelift that arrived in 2001 for the four-doors and in 2003 for the two-doors. The Compact does not follow that pattern. Its headlights are a design of their own, it keeps them unchanged through its production, and its bumpers are catalogued in groups that carry no date at all. 1,3

That has one practical consequence that matters more than any other: a Sedan part is not a Compact part, even when the names match. "E46 front bumper", "E46 headlight" and "E46 M bumper" in a listing almost always mean a Sedan, Touring, Coupé or Convertible part. For a Compact, the listing has to say Compact, or the part has to come from one.

The market makes this sharper. The catalogue lists the Compact for Europe only, including right-hand-drive cars for the UK, and not for North America. 4 Much of the E46 advice online comes from US owners and US catalogue lookups, and for the Compact it has nothing to say: there were no US Compacts to fit parts to. When a guide says a part "fits all E46", check whether its author ever had a Compact in mind.

Headlights: two families, nothing else

We covered the Compact's headlights in "The loner". In short: the catalogue lists exactly two families, halogen and bi-xenon, each for left- and right-hand drive. There is no plain single-xenon Compact headlight, and no adaptive (cornering) one; adaptive units belong to the facelift Coupé and Convertible. 3

Two consequences for a buyer:

  1. Era does not matter. A Compact headlight from an early car fits a late car of the same family and drive side, as far as the catalogue shows. 3
  2. Halogen to bi-xenon is a technology change, not a swap. As with every E46, the bi-xenon unit brings its own electrical requirements; see our headlight articles for what that involves.

Front bumper: standard, M package, and the washer split

The catalogue lists two standard front covers for the Compact, for the same models: 316ti, 318ti, 318td, 320td and 325ti. They differ by one piece of equipment: one is "for vehicles with headlight cleaning system", the other carries no condition. 2 So the question to ask about your own car is not its year but whether it has headlight washers, the small nozzles in the bumper below the lights.

The M package front follows the same pattern: two versions, one for cars with the headlight cleaning system. 2 More importantly, it is the Compact's own M front. The Sedan and Touring M package front cover is listed for the Sedan and Touring, diesel included; the Compact has a separate number for its M package front. 1 A listing for an "E46 M front bumper" is therefore almost certainly not a Compact part.

Two further notes from the catalogue: 1,2

  • The M package covers are catalogued for ordinary Compacts, not only for cars built with the package. Fitting an M front to a standard Compact is a listed path in the catalogue, not a home-made conversion.
  • The catalogue's numbers for the Compact's standard fronts became available in April 2001 and the M fronts in March 2002. These are dates when the part numbers appeared, not build dates of cars, and the catalogue gives no vehicle date range for either. 2

Behind the cover sits the carrier, the structural part. The catalogue lists two front carriers side by side on every E46 body, one tagged "4 km/h" and one "8 km/h = 5 mph"; which market gets which is not stated. 1

Rear bumper: where the model counts

On the Sedan, the engine almost never decides which bumper cover fits. On the Compact rear, it does. The second catalogue mirror lists the 325ti with its own standard rear cover, while the other standard rear cover is listed for the 316ti, 318ti, 318td and 320td only. The 325ti's number also replaced an older one that the catalogue marks as exchangeable. 2 Why the six-cylinder car differs is not stated. For a buyer the rule is simple: know which Compact the cover came from, and match 325ti to 325ti.

Two more splits at the rear: 1,2

  • Parking sensors. The Compact's M package rear exists in a version for cars with park distance control and one without.
  • Tow hitch. The first mirror lists a primed standard rear cover for cars with a trailer coupling. The second mirror has no usage rows for that number, so the tow-hitch version is on one source only and we do not treat it as settled.

The Compact also has its own rear carrier, as does the Touring; the Sedan, Coupé and M3 share a different one. 1

No facelift line, and what that saves you

The Sedan and Touring changed their front at the September 2001 facelift, and the Coupé and Convertible in March 2003. A buyer for those bodies has to know the car's build date before ordering a bumper. For the Compact, neither the bumper groups nor the headlights show a date split. 1,3

That simplifies one question and leaves another open. The simple part: an early and a late Compact take the same family of covers, chosen by equipment (washers, sensors) and, at the rear, by model. The open part: the catalogue shows no split, but a group without dates is not proof that nothing changed. If a cover from another Compact does not line up, the brackets are the first thing to check.

What we have not covered

The card for this article asked about the bonnet as well. Our research has not extracted the Compact's bonnet, grille or front wing groups, so we make no statement about whether they interchange with the Sedan's. The pictures in this article are illustrations and are not evidence of any part's shape. 5

Before you buy

  1. Does the listing say Compact? If not, assume it is for another E46. 1,3
  2. Headlights: halogen or bi-xenon, left- or right-hand drive. Nothing else to match. 3
  3. Front bumper: does your car have headlight washers? That chooses between the two versions of both the standard and the M front. 2
  4. Rear bumper: 325ti or not? The six-cylinder Compact has its own standard rear. 2
  5. M rear: parking sensors or not? 2
  6. Tow hitch: ask, and expect to check; the catalogue evidence for the tow-hitch rear is thin. 1,2
  7. Bonnet, grille, wings: outside this article.

Notes on the evidence

Confidence. Headlight statements rest on two catalogue mirrors agreeing at part-number level. Bumper statements rest on one mirror for the groups and a second mirror for the equipment and model conditions; both mirrors derive from the same BMW data, so their agreement confirms the reading, not an independent source. The market statement rests on one mirror's region trees.

Conflicts recorded. (1) An earlier bumper study concluded that the engine never decides a standard cover; the second mirror shows the Compact's standard rear as the exception. (2) The tow-hitch rear cover appears on one mirror and has no usage rows on the other. (3) The Compact's M front cover for cars with headlight washers is printed with an unusual number prefix on both mirrors; recorded as printed, not corrected.

Not established. Why the 325ti has its own rear; which market receives which front carrier; whether the Compact's bonnet, grille and wings interchange with other bodies; any change in Compact bumpers not reflected in the catalogue's dates. The images are AI illustrations generated by Zauberlabs; they show the general look only.
